Abstract: The lead article, What Should Our Schools Be Doing?, by Francis X. Hezel, S.J., examines differing views of the goals of education in Micronesia. It outlines three major perspectives: preparing students for wage employment through manpower training, preserving cultural continuity against modern influences, and emphasizing academic skills to allow students to compete internationally.
Additional commentary references curriculum debates in Pohnpei, teacher concerns in Chuuk, and viewpoints from educators in Kosrae, Yap, and the Marshall Islands. These illustrate the diversity of expectations placed on schools and the challenges of reconciling them.
