Abstract: The lead article, A Look at Dispensaries in the FSM, by Eugenia A. Samuel and Marcus H. Samo, examines the condition of rural health dispensaries. Using a case from an outer island in Pohnpei, it illustrates how facilities are sometimes closed, understaffed, or lacking supplies. The article highlights the dependence of island communities on dispensaries as their only access point for care, and the consequences when these are nonfunctional.
Additional sections compare conditions across Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae, noting differences in staffing and government support. Interviews with health assistants and patients provide examples of how shortages affect treatment of routine illnesses, maternal care, and referrals to hospitals.
