Abstract: The lead article, Myths of the FSM Economy, by Francis X. Hezel, S.J. and Chris Lightfoot, critiques widespread misconceptions about the FSM’s economic prospects. It argues that assumptions about perpetual population growth, endless U.S. aid, and guaranteed economic expansion have encouraged poor planning. Drawing on demographic data, the authors note that population growth has slowed sharply since the 1980s, undermining a key premise of past economic projections.
Additional discussion considers migration trends from Chuuk and Pohnpei to Guam and the U.S. mainland, the limits of Compact funding in Kosrae and Yap, and comparisons with economic performance in the Marshall Islands. The article emphasizes the need to move beyond myths and adopt realistic strategies for sustainable development.
