Abstract: The lead article, The Role of Culture in Economic Development, by Francis X. Hezel, S.J., considers how cultural traditions both enable and constrain economic growth in Micronesia. Drawing on Thomas Friedman’s idea of a “flat world” shaped by globalization, it contrasts the global mobility of capital and opportunity with island realities where family obligations, land tenure, and customary sharing practices influence business decisions. The essay argues that economic policy must account for cultural context rather than assume universal models.
Additional sections discuss small business struggles in Chuuk and Pohnpei, cultural expectations of reciprocity in Yap, and land-related constraints on development in Kosrae. The issue also notes comparisons with the Marshall Islands and Palau, reflecting on how different cultural and historical experiences affect development paths. An accompanying MicSem video announcement, History of Micronesia, introduces a five-part documentary series on colonial and modern transformations.
