Rang
Rang (also spelled Raang, Raeng, or Ranung) is a village in Fanif municipality on Yap (Marbaa’) in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is located at approximately 9.5654° N latitude and 138.1064° E longitude.
Classification and position
Rang is classified within the Yapese system of ranked villages associated with Tabinaw as a Caste I, Class 4 (I–4–D) village. It is identified as a former ulun village, indicating that it previously held a leading position within the Fanif district.
Rang is described as having been reduced in rank following conflict with Gilfiz, after which it was incorporated into the Gilfiz-centered district structure. It is also described as maintaining connections across different alliance groupings within the district.
Location and setting
Rang is situated within Fanif on Yap (Marbaa’), within the inland cluster of villages including Ateliew, Gurung, Gilfiz, Yiin, and Runu’w. It is associated with the polling area of Gilfiz.
The cultural site Tayey is located approximately 0.10 km from the village. A burial ground is located approximately 0.37 km from the village.
Land and population
Rang is recorded as having a land area of approximately 331.71 acres, with a population of 41 persons in 1966.
Structure and relationships
Rang historically consisted of multiple tabinaw (estate units), with accounts indicating approximately fifty such units in earlier periods, though fewer remained in later observations. The village was divided into four named sections associated with ranked tabinaw, with reorganization occurring following conflict with Gilfiz.
The highest-ranking estate within Rang is identified as Guchol, whose holder serves as the village chief (pilung ko binaw).
Rang is recorded as exercising authority over subordinate settlements within Fanif, including Molway and Tabelang, and is also associated with Gurung within its earlier political structure. Inter-village communication involving Rang follows established channels through designated tabinaw rather than direct transmission between villages.
