Abstract: Examines the political and economic systems of Yap, particularly focusing on the roles of Yapese money and the Sawei tribute network. This research explores how the two main types of currency, "gau" and "fei," were utilized in trade and tribute networks connecting Yap with Palau and other islands before the onset of Japanese occupation during World War I. It also highlights the significance of aragonite, a material used in currency, and its impact on inter-island relations and the evolution of these networks over time.
The article further delves into the social and political conditions of the region, identifying key conflicts and social dynamics that influenced the tribute systems. It also discusses the effects of German colonial rule and offers insights into the genealogical and legendary evidence pointing to periods of flourishing trade from the 12th to 18th centuries. Through collaboration with Macquarie University and the Australian National University, the research contributes to understanding the complex socio-economic structures of Yapese society prior to World War I.
