Abstract: Beginning in 1951, the Headquarters for the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) regularly published a magazine that detailed its work in the region. From 1951 through the first issue of 1956, the magazine was known as the Micronesian Monthly; from the second issue of 1956 through the end of the run in 1980, it was known as the Micronesian Reporter. From 1951 through December 1967, publication cycles varied: For the most part, the magazine was produced monthly, though certain issues cover two or more months. Starting in 1968, the magazine was formally shifted to a quarterly publication cycle, which continued through the first quarter of 1980, when publication ceased.
The July 1956 issue centers on education reform, particularly the growing demand for secondary schooling in the Truk (now Chuuk) and Ponape (now Pohnpei) districts. It frames these developments against broader debates in the Trust Territory Congress over budget allocations and training of local teachers.
Key articles cover the inauguration of Xavier High School in Truk, managed by the Jesuit order, and the teacher training center at Ponape. A policy feature details how scholarships were being awarded for study in Guam and Hawai‘i. Other items report on the arrival of U.S. Navy construction teams in Ulithi and a fisheries survey conducted off Kosrae. The cultural section profiles canoe building in Satawal, with interviews from master navigator Hipour.
Individuals noted include Father Thomas Finley, Jesuit principal at Xavier, District Education Officer Luther Gould, and Speaker Lazarus Salii of Palau. Institutions cited are the Trust Territory Congress, Jesuit mission schools, and the U.S. Navy Seabees.
