Micronesian Reporter 1958 V06 01. Micronesian Reporter (Report). Hagåtña, Guam: Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. January 1958. p. 31.

Abstract: Beginning in 1951, the Headquarters for the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) regularly published a magazine that detailed its work in the region. From 1951 through the first issue of 1956, the magazine was known as the Micronesian Monthly; from the second issue of 1956 through the end of the run in 1980, it was known as the Micronesian Reporter. From 1951 through December 1967, publication cycles varied: For the most part, the magazine was produced monthly, though certain issues cover two or more months. Starting in 1968, the magazine was formally shifted to a quarterly publication cycle, which continued through the first quarter of 1980, when publication ceased.

The January–February 1958 issue emphasizes political organization in the Marshall Islands, particularly the convening of the Marshallese Congress on October 21, 1957, after a two-year hiatus. The editorial theme highlights unity and collective responsibility as central to building stronger legislative institutions under trusteeship. Delegates stressed both economic development and the practical needs of transportation and trade.

Key articles cover debates among congressmen from Majuro and Rongelap regarding increased U.S. aid, shipping schedules, and the marketing of copra. The issue includes the text of speeches calling for unity, while also reporting on divisions within the body. A cultural feature, “The Epic of Rongelap,” recounts Marshallese oral tradition and community resilience, situating contemporary politics within the deep heritage of the atolls. Additional news notes improvements in school facilities on Yap and fisheries studies around Kosrae.

Individuals highlighted include Congressman Dwight Heine of the Marshalls, High Commissioner Delmas H. Nucker, and local chiefs serving as delegates. Institutions cited are the Marshallese Congress, the Trust Territory administration, and village councils, alongside church missions supporting literacy and youth programs.
