Abstract: “New Investigations of Early Prehistoric Settlement on Yap, Western Caroline Islands” explores recent archaeological findings related to early human settlement on the island of Yap in the Western Caroline Islands. The research aims to reconcile various lines of evidence, including archaeological, linguistic, and environmental, to understand Yap’s prehistoric human settlement. The emphasis has traditionally been on later cultural developments, but this study seeks to identify earlier archaeological sites that have so far been elusive.
The investigation discusses the past focus on later cultural stages, such as the “sawei” exchange system and local pottery production, which was initially thought to have connections to the early groups in the Mariana Islands but was later determined to be of local origin. Recent efforts have included a research program initiated in October 2016 to better identify and understand these early settlements, aiming to create spatial models for locating potential sites of early human activities that occurred between 3,000 and 2,000 years ago.
