Luech (also spelled Luetch, Luets, Luwech, or Luweech) is a village in Rull municipality on Yap (Marbaa’) in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is located at approximately 9.4876° N latitude and 138.0825° E longitude.

Classification

Luech is classified within the Yapese system of ranked villages associated with Tabinaw as a Caste II, Class 5 (II–5–J) village. This classification places it within the middle tier of the traditional hierarchy.

Location

Luech is situated within Rull on Yap (Marbaa’). It lies within the Rull village grouping and is associated with the polling area of Lamer. Within the Rull district, Luech is positioned among nearby villages including Lamer and Ngof.

Population, land and features

Survey data from 1966 records Luech as having a land area of approximately 488.84 acres, with a population of 35 persons at that time. This corresponds to an acreage-per-person ratio of approximately 13.97 acres, as recorded in the same survey .

A World War II aircraft crash site is located approximately 0.55 km from the village. A communication site is located approximately 0.68–0.72 km from the village area.

Environmental and resource context

Mangrove areas around Luech are described as among the most extensive in Yap, with adjacent lagoon environments forming part of an integrated coastal system that supports reef fish populations and other marine resources .

These mangrove–lagoon systems are understood to function as nursery habitats for reef species, particularly where connected to outer reef environments, a relationship emphasized in island-wide conservation analysis .

Cultural and historical sites

Oral history accounts identify the Luech area as containing sites associated with World War II activity, including locations in the broader Lamaer–Luweech region that continue to attract visiting researchers and tourists .These sites are regarded locally as part of Yap’s historical landscape and are tied to community memory and external visitation.

Community testimony indicates that the Luech area, together with nearby Yinuf and other Rull villages, includes access to natural resources such as mangrove stands and nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) used for traditional roofing materials.
