Leng
Leng (also recorded as Leang or Lenung) is a village in Gagil municipality on Gagil-Tamil in Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Leng is located at approximately 9.535378327 latitude and 138.1853116 longitude on the eastern side of Gagil-Tamil and is associated with the polling area of Gachpar.
The village forms part of a cluster of nearby settlements that includes Lebinaw, Riken, and Wanyan. A cultural site is located approximately 0.60 km from the village, and a burial ground lies approximately 0.39 km away. Several fish weirs are associated with the village area, including Ayin, Dibay, Gaksew, Gileen, and Gorong. A bridge is located approximately 0.31 km from the village.
Caste and class
Leng is classified within the Yapese system of ranked villages associated with Tabinaw as Caste I, Class 4 (I–4–I).
This places Leng among the higher-ranking villages within the Gagil area. Villages at this level occupied a relatively senior position within systems of landholding, coordination, and inter-village relationships.
Local governance and land management
Ethnographic accounts describe Leng as a village in which women exercised governance authority relating to communal land maintenance obligations. Residents could be fined for failure to comply with requirements concerning land clearing and upkeep within the village.
Leng is also associated with restored traditional stone weirs and fish traps maintained as part of local resource management practices.
Historical references
Leng appears in World War II–era administrative and civil affairs documentation and was identified in oral-history interviews relating to the Japanese lighthouse construction at Dalap. Residents of Leng and nearby Lebinaw provided oral accounts connected to the site and its construction history.
