Goochol

Goochol (also recorded as Goqchol, Gootchol, or Gootsol) is a village in Gagil municipality on Gagil-Tamil in Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Goochol is located at approximately 9.559545468 latitude and 138.1905887 longitude.

Several fish weirs are associated with the village area, including Daqoloch, located approximately 0.89 km from the village, as well as additional unnamed fish weirs located between approximately 0.83 km and 1.13 km away.

Caste and class

Goochol is classified within the Yapese system of ranked villages associated with Tabinaw as Caste III, Class 7 (III–7).

This places Goochol among the lower-ranking villages within the Gagil area. Villages at this level occupied a relatively subordinate position within systems of landholding and inter-village relationships tied to higher-ranking settlements.

Inter-village relationships

Ethnographic accounts describe Goochol as having a competitive or tension-filled relationship with Tenfar. One recorded dispute concerned ceremonial precedence, in which Goochol declined participation in a performance sequence because of disagreement over the order of appearance.
