Abstract: The NIS Gazetter Program was an effort to systematize and regularize the organization of foreign place names as well as maps. This particular 1957 Gazetter deals with the Western Pacific. The gazetteer contains about 14,100 entries for places and features in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and other West Pacific islands: about 2,700 entries for the Mariana Islands, Guam, and Marcus Island (pages 1-35); 6,750 for the Caroline Islands (pages 37-115); and 4,650 for the Marshall Islands and Wake (pages 117-70). T h e entries include approved standard names and unapproved variant names, the latter cross-referenced to the standard names. Users of the gazetteer should always refer to main entries for approved names.
