Abstract: This article reports early post–World War I concerns over the strategic importance of Yap and other Micronesian islands in international rivalry. Drawing on commentary from a former German colonial administrator, it highlights the geopolitical significance of submarine cable routes and island fortifications, suggesting that control of Yap could influence communications and power balances between Japan, the United States, and other Pacific actors. The report frames Micronesia not as an economic asset but as a strategic node in emerging global competition, emphasizing tensions over imperial control and communications infrastructure in the Pacific.
