Abstract: This article examines China’s expanding footprint across the Pacific Islands and argues that seemingly modest infrastructure projects may collectively weaken the United States’ long-standing defense architecture in the region. Focusing on airfield rehabilitation and related dual-use facilities, the author situates these developments within a broader Chinese strategy aimed at increasing access, influence, and logistical reach beyond the First and Second Island Chains. The analysis highlights the strategic implications for U.S. force projection, alliance management, and deterrence, particularly in the context of the Freely Associated States (COFA) and U.S. treaty obligations.
