Abstract: Micronesia—one of the three divisions of Oceania originally proposed by Dumont d’Urville—encompasses about 2,100 islands, most of which lie north of the equator but below latitude 20º N (map 10). From west to east, the main archipelagoes are Palau (also known as Belau), the Marianas, the Carolines, the Marshalls, and Kiribati (formerly the Gilbert Islands). Tuvalu (formerly the Ellice Islands) lies between Kiribati and Fiji and is considered here in relation to the early settlement of atolls, although its occupants speak Polynesian languages. Despite the great number of islands in Micronesia, in aggregate they total a mere 2,700
