Abstract: Abstract
The Central Pacific island of Yap served as the focal point in a far‐flung maritime network for centuries before European colonial intrusion into the region. Yapese exercised a limited degree of economic, political, and religious or supernatural control over the other, much smaller islands in this Micronesian archipelago. This system of interrelationships is often construed as a small‐scale, informal empire.
