Abstract: This article analyzes migration from the Federated States of Micronesia to Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands following the implementation of the Compact of Free Association. Using census and survey data, it documents the scale, composition, and socioeconomic characteristics of migrant populations, including differences between destinations. The study examines employment patterns, household structures, education levels, and remittances, challenging the notion of a “brain drain” by showing that migrants are primarily less-educated workers seeking employment opportunities. It highlights the role of migration as a response to limited economic prospects at home and explores its implications for both sending and receiving communities, emphasizing evolving patterns of settlement and social integration.
