Micronesian Monthly 1953 V02 10. Micronesian Monthly (Report). Fort Ruger, O'ahu, HI: Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. October 1953. p. 23.

Abstract: Beginning in 1951, the Headquarters for the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) regularly published a magazine that detailed its work in the region. From 1951 through the first issue of 1956, the magazine was known as the Micronesian Monthly; from the second issue of 1956 through the end of the run in 1980, it was known as the Micronesian Reporter. From 1951 through December 1967, publication cycles varied: For the most part, the magazine was produced monthly, though certain issues cover two or more months. Starting in 1968, the magazine was formally shifted to a quarterly publication cycle, which continued through the first quarter of 1980, when publication ceased.

The October 1953 issue of Micronesian Monthly reported on the departure of a high-level U.S. inspection team for a month-long tour of Samoa and the Trust Territory. Led by Senator Guy C. Cordon of Oregon, chairman of the Senate subcommittee on Interior appropriations, and joined by Senator Milton R. Young of North Dakota, the delegation also included top Interior Department officials. The group met with High Commissioner Frank E. Midkiff in Honolulu before setting out, emphasizing their desire for firsthand observation of conditions in the islands to inform congressional oversight. The visit was presented as an important opportunity to link Washington’s decisions with realities on the ground in Micronesia.

Notable articles described the delegation’s itinerary, its goals of assessing economic and social progress, and the anticipated implications for future appropriations and legislation. Profiles of the senators and Interior officials were included, alongside summaries of their discussions with Midkiff and his staff. District reports continued the magazine’s regular coverage of education, health, agriculture, and shipping, demonstrating ongoing activity in local governance while awaiting the inspection team’s findings. The issue also included lighter features such as humor columns and cultural commentary.

Key individuals featured included Senator Guy C. Cordon, Senator Milton R. Young, William C. Strand (Director, Office of Territories), Del Nucker (Executive Officer, Office of Territories), and Robert Parkman (Cordon’s aide). On the territorial side, High Commissioner Frank E. Midkiff and his headquarters staff played host to the visitors. Institutions highlighted included the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, the Department of the Interior, the Trust Territory Headquarters, and district governments. The issue conveyed the significance of the tour in shaping U.S. understanding and funding of the trusteeship.
