Abstract: HOM.48 (1521–1990) serves as a supplementary reference volume to the History of Micronesia series and includes a historical atlas of Micronesia along with additional documentary materials covering the entire span of Micronesian history from the earliest European contact to the late twentieth century. The documents and maps refer to locations across the Caroline Islands, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, Palau, and Gilbert Islands, as well as important regional centers such as Guam, Saipan, Koror, Yap, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae, Majuro, and Jaluit. The atlas and accompanying materials illustrate major exploration routes, colonial administrative boundaries, trade routes, and historical events affecting the islands. The volume includes references to numerous explorers, colonial officials, missionaries, traders, and political leaders associated with the historical development of Micronesia from the era of Spanish exploration beginning with Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 through later periods of Spanish, German, Japanese, and United States administration. Maps and supporting documents illustrate changes in territorial control, missionary networks, trade routes, and administrative centers across the islands over several centuries. Additional materials provide geographic and historical reference information relating to the islands and their political development through the twentieth century. The atlas and supplementary documents therefore provide a reference guide to the places, historical periods, and institutions covered throughout the History of Micronesia series and serve as an overview of Micronesian history from the earliest European contact through the late twentieth century.
