Abstract: This article provides a post–World War II survey of American-controlled Pacific island territories, describing conditions across key sites including Guam, Truk, Yap, Ulithi, and Palau. Based on extensive travel through former Japanese mandate islands, it documents the rapid transition from major wartime bases to largely abandoned or minimally staffed outposts. The report highlights the emergence of a temporary American “island empire,” the uncertain political future of these territories, and the varied conditions of local populations and infrastructure. It also reflects on the legacy of colonial regimes and wartime destruction, offering early observations on the strategic, administrative, and cultural challenges facing the United States in Micronesia.
