Abstract: KPress Vol. 07 Iss. 26: NEWS: Pohnpei, FSM—on Tuesday, November 20, Ihso Nahnken of Nett Mr. Salvador Iriarte joined President Emanuel “Manny” Mori, Governor Johnny David, Senator Feliciano Perman, and a host of dignitaries to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Etscheit family’s latest project, the Pohnpei Shopping Center, with the upbeat spirit of the ceremony undampened by heavy rain that at times fell in near-horizontal streaks; in his closing remarks Senator Perman congratulated the family and Agnes Etscheit, the matriarch, for their forward thinking and stated his belief that the shopping center would benefit tourism by providing a much-needed facelift and modernization for Pohnpei; according to Robert Etscheit, the project would encompass approximately 135,000 square feet; separate reporting covers the Third Special Session of the Fifteenth Congress, which concluded before noon on Saturday, November 24, after senators spent nearly eleven days debating and deciding vital issues for the FSM, much of the work occurring off the floor in continuing meetings late into the evenings; senators emphasized their commitment to being well informed on a wide range of issues and working until they believed they had sufficient information to make decisions they felt were right for the nation and their constituents, while also expressing frustration that their work was too often hampered by the Executive Branch, with Senator Urusemal among those voicing concern; OPINION / EDITORIAL: a separate item reports that in March the Board of Directors sought a legal opinion from the Acting Attorney General on whether it was lawful to pay Santos an additional amount, and that on April 27 the Acting Attorney General issued an opinion stating that it was legal to pay the additional salary to a contracted employee; six days later, on September 19, 2007, David wrote to the 64-year-old Santos informing him that his contract as engineer for the station would not be renewed, prompting Santos to argue that although civil service employees are required to retire at age 60, he was a contract employee not bound by that mandate, noting that his contract had been renewed four times since he turned 60; a final notice invites interested applicants to submit a curriculum vitae, including salary history and a cover letter, by email, post, or fax no later than December 19, 2007.
