Abstract: Yapese-language vernacular reader presenting a collection of traditional, historical, and cultural narratives from Yap, with Yapese text and English translations in parallel columns. The volume includes accounts of World War II on Yap; origin narratives for streams, needlefish, and social divisions; stories of Piirow and the monitor lizard; clan histories including Fanif; accounts of turtle tribute and associated customs; narratives explaining the emergence of chiefly and low-caste (piiluung and milngaay) systems; and stories associated with place, migration, and identity, including Leqmeed’s movement from Fanif to Maap’ and Qokaaw. The work reflects Yapese oral tradition, ecological knowledge, navigation context, social hierarchy, and customary law, and was prepared for educational use within Yap’s vernacular language curriculum. The second edition was edited by Gilnifrad Lukubyad and Rosemary Brugger, illustrated by Robert Fithing, and orthographically standardized by John Thayer Jensen. It represents part of broader bilingual education efforts in the Trust Territory period and serves as both a pedagogical text and a preservation record of Yapese narrative traditions.
