Abstract: Since the defear of Japan in 1945 American influence has been decisive in determining the fate of Micronesia. The area comprises more than 2,000 islands with a population of approximately 200,000. This volume consists of seven chapters providing an overview of the issues involved in self-determination versus American strategic perceptions; the approach of the US military towards Micronesia in the 1950s and 1960; negotiations on Free Association (COFA) between 1970 and 1986; the issue of the' nuclear free' constitution in the Republic of Palau; questions affecting the Republic of the Marshall Islands; a reassessment of US military priorities; and a concluding appraisal of future challenges. Gary Smith argues that the Pentagon greatly exaggerated the strategic value of Micronesia for the purposes of US global policy. Independence is presented as a realistic option.
