Abstract: This article analyzes contemporary migration patterns among Pollap Atoll residents in Chuuk State, focusing on how increased mobility for education and employment is reshaping gender roles and household organization. Drawing on ethnographic case studies, it contrasts traditional patterns of circulation and kin-based subsistence with emerging urban and wage-labor contexts, particularly in Weno. The study shows that while migration builds on longstanding mobility traditions, it disproportionately alters women’s roles by weakening matrilineal residence patterns and increasing dependence on male income and nuclear households. The article situates these changes within broader processes of modernization, highlighting tensions between continuity and transformation in Micronesian social systems.
