Abstract: The primary purpose of this study was to determine the causal factors relating to depopulation on Yap which has taken place after western contact and under the Spanish, German and Japanese colonial administrations of the island. Various theories which have been proposed in the past for the problem of depopulation in other areas of the world are examined as well as social, cultural and psychological factors inherent in Yap culture. In so doing a great amount of data on Yap cultural life and the various colonial administrative policies has been assembled.
