Abstract: The Micronesian Islands were the last of the Oceanic areas to be annexed by the world powers. Between the era of Magellan and that of Nimitz, the islands' status changed from that of neglected left-overs in the search for Pacific colonies to that of major bases in the search for military security in the Pacific. This shift in status was the direct outcome of the meteoric rise of two new world powers in the Pacific–Japan and the United States. Within the span of five decades the natives of Micronesia witnessed the transfer of sovereignty from Spain and Germany to Japan and America.
