Abstract: ...Times have changed. The support system that parents once had from their extended family in raising their children is no longer present. Yet, parents are generally busier today than they were in the past and can no longer be around to su- pervise their daughters as closely as they might have for- merly. To instruct and instill values, mothers need time to talk with their daughters and to listen to them as well. A strong re- lationship between mothers and daughters might, in the end, be the strongest way of protecting them and teaching them to make smart decisions. I recall the forceful words that a counselor once spoke to me when he insisted that in his ex- perience most teenage girls who became pregnant had con- fessed that they felt that their families were not interested in them because they rarely communicated with them...
