Abstract: KPress Vol. 15 Iss. 25: NEWS: This issue is organized around a thematic special feature drawn from an APIC-sponsored visit to Japan by five senior Pacific Islands journalists, presenting six reported articles that examine how Japan and Pacific Island countries face comparable structural challenges—aging populations, energy dependence, environmental constraints, and rural decline—while highlighting Japan’s distinctive responses driven by local “self-starters,” including profiles of entrepreneurs and civic actors such as Michi Ogawa’s business initiatives, Hiroshi Kogachi’s community-led recycling movement in Okinawa that emerged in the 1990s in the absence of government action, and examples of advanced public transportation, smart vehicles, smart housing, smart parking systems, and factory automation observed at sites including Toyota City; the feature emphasizes incremental, community-rooted problem-solving rather than national-level bravado, and explicitly draws parallels to similar grassroots innovators within the FSM whose efforts mirror these approaches; governance and planning coverage includes reference to the FSM Infrastructure Development Plan for FY 2016–FY 2025 and a fisheries policy explainer under the “Talking Fish” rubric examining how the FSM manages its fisheries resources; regional affairs note expanded air connectivity with weekly service to Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Fiji, and Australia; sports coverage highlights FSM boxer Chieng receiving the ANOC 2015 Pacific Games Female Athlete of the Year award following her gold medal performance in boxing at the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
