Abstract: Fr. Gerardo Bouwens' confidential report to Fr. Francisco Garcia gives a detailed, critical account of the causes and conduct of the 1684 revolt. It reconstructs the shipwreck of the 1683 sloop, Governor Saravia's death, the contested succession of Esplana over Quiroga, Quiroga's northern campaigns and cannon salvage, the attacks of 23 July 1684, missionary deaths and injuries, destruction of churches and residences, desertions, Esplana's ineffective military leadership and proposed poisoning strategy, and the broader damage to the Mariana Mission.
