Abstract: Letter from Fr. Alonso de la Vera Cruz de Jesús to the Pope, written from Manila in July 1580. He describes the early progress of evangelization in the Philippines, emphasizing the baptism of chiefs and the establishment of churches in newly conquered areas. Fr. de Jesús highlights the shortage of clergy, the overwork of missionaries, and the need for reinforcements from Spain and New Spain. He praises the receptiveness of many natives while also warning of resistance and the persistence of traditional practices. The letter appeals for papal support, stressing that the permanence of the Spanish presence depends on strong religious foundations.
