Abstract: This TTPI Headquarters News issue reports on the aftermath of Typhoon Karen, noting that Guam has been declared a major disaster area. KUAM radio is back on the air via generator, the Red Cross is deploying with Judge Shriver coordinating, schools are closed and serving as shelters, and six casualties have been reported. With island-wide power and water outages, distribution centers are operating and Navy aircraft are flying in generators and water purification units. Guam Memorial Hospital is largely unusable but offering emergency care, RCA has resumed operations from a temporary site, outside media are on island, and neighboring areas are offering assistance.
Evacuations from Guam to Saipan are underway by air and sea, with housing arranged at District Headquarters, hotels, and former NAVAD quarters for dependents, stranded passengers, and students. Saipan has instituted temporary rationing of staple foods with purchase limits while new supplies are sourced from Japan. Separately, the yacht MYONIE, blown off course by the typhoon en route from Fiji to the Philippines, made an unscheduled stop at Truk for storm repairs.
