Abstract: A letter from Fr. Herrera to the Viceroy of New Spain, dated July 1570, written from Panay. In this letter, Fr. Herrera details his voyage starting from their departure on 9 March, mentioning weather conditions and navigational challenges. They encountered good weather initially, which later turned into a struggle with a typhoon that delayed their travel. Despite these challenges, they managed to reach the Philippines on 4 June after stopping briefly in Guam on 12-15 May to replenish supplies.
Once in the Philippines, Fr. Herrera and Captain Juan de la Isla sought out the Governor in Panay to understand where the vessels should head next. Despite concerns about the safety and accessibility of the port in Panay, they proceeded there on 22 June. Fr. Herrera describes the location as inhospitable, with brackish water, necessary travel by boat between homes, and a lack of food. There was also fear of Portuguese invasion, causing unrest among the men who were hesitant about staying in such conditions without some enforced order. Eventually, it is noted that Legazpi moved back to Cebu in November 1570.
