Abstract: This paper features two recent events on Guam that have received national and international attention, a suicide by a former governor and the passage of an anti-abortion law. The events reveal a complex indigenous cultural history as the Chamorro people negotiate their survival and development amonga host of alien (Spanish Catholic, liberal American, and, increasingly, Japanese) ideas and institutions.
