Abstract: Two letters from the Viceroy to the King, dated Mexico 25 February 1564 and 15 June 1564” details two letters sent by the Viceroy of New Spain to King Philip II of Spain, explaining delays in the departure of a fleet intended for a voyage. The first letter, dated February 25, 1564, attributes the delay to the need for sufficient supplies for the vessels’ two-year voyage and the delayed arrival of artillery from Veracruz. The Viceroy assures that everything will be ready by May. The second letter, dated June 15, 1564, cites calms and contrary winds as reasons for further delay, as key ship parts did not reach the port of Navidad until June 10. The fleet, consisting of four vessels with 300 Spaniards on board, is expected to be ready to sail by September. Notably, the expedition includes skilled navigator Fray Andrés de Urdaneta.
