Abstract: KPress Vol. 16 Iss. 23: NEWS: Ottawa, Canada—FSM representative Yolanda Joab delivered a widely acclaimed speech at the One Young World Summit, receiving a standing ovation from approximately 1,300 youth ambassadors gathered from around the world, with plenary sessions focused on education, environment, global business, health, human rights, and peace and security, highlighting FSM engagement in global youth leadership forums; labor and immigration reporting notes that in late August the FSM Department of Labor and Immigration temporarily reversed a decision to expel foreign workers, after initially returning applications for forty-six foreign employees without endorsement in Pohnpei and issuing similar notifications to employers in Chuuk, prompting concern among businesses reliant on foreign labor; infrastructure coverage reports that repairs to the main fiber-optic line would result in slower internet service from October 31 through November 8, with FSM Telecommunications Corporation switching to satellite service to minimize disruption and requesting customers reduce usage to essential communications; international affairs reporting notes that the King of Morocco provided support enabling Pacific Island participation in COP 22 on climate change, while Asia-Pacific youth convened for dialogue in Chengdu, China; community and development coverage reports that workers in the Chuuk lagoon community of Piis Paneu completed construction of the island’s first home as part of ongoing rebuilding efforts following Typhoon Maysak, with support from USAID and Peace Corps Response; OPINION / EDITORIAL: commentary addresses the status of foreign workers in Guam and the FSM, including correspondence between the Government of Guam and FSM authorities regarding verification of citizenship for incarcerated individuals selected for sentence commutation and repatriation, disputes over assistance in removals, and broader debate over labor policy and the statutory role of FSM employment services in balancing manpower needs, training, and reliance on non-resident workers.
