Abstract: This paper will review what is known about public and private libraries in Micronesia during the period of the German colonial administration in the Marshall Islands (1886–1914) and the rest of Micronesia (1898–1914) with the exception of Guam. In the following we will briefly address the nature of public libraries in the German colonies in Africa and the Samoa:J before we concentrate on the situation in Micronesia.
