Abstract: Elementary schools tend to place a strong emphasis on math and literacy skills, often leaving science relegated to periodic instruction, detached from other content areas. We propose that poetry, one of the five primary genres of science picture books, can serve as a mechanism for breaking down existing barriers between content areas. From a science standpoint, poetry has the potential to provide a less intimidating access point for receptive language, thereby introducing science content to readers who are not as confident or strategic in reading, while from an expressive language standpoint, poetry can allow students opportunities to use the specialized vocabulary of science within both structured and unstructured forms.
