Abstract: Formation of phosphate rock found below a surface layer of humus on Jemo and other islands of the Marshall group is belived to be recent and in some cases contemporary. It is concluded that calcium phosphate of guano is dissolved as it is washed through the acid humus by rain water and is then precipitated (as a brown cement in which apatite is a major constituent) on contact with the underlying limy sands.
