Abstract: he article titled Some Clan Names of the Chuukic-speaking Peoples of Micronesia by Jeff Marck appears as Chapter 27 in Alexander Adelaar and Andrew Pawley (eds.), Austronesian historical linguistics and culture history: a festschrift for Robert Blust, published by Pacific Linguistics in 2009, spanning pages 461 to 487. The study examines 27 Chuukic clan names and is organized into the following sections: Introduction; The Proto Oceanic and Proto (Nuclear) Micronesian linguistic and matrilineal heritage; Ethnographic and dictionary sources; Data and reconstructions; and Distributions, categorisation and conclusions. An abbreviations section lists regional codes and locales, including Republic of Palau: Pur – Pulo Anna, and Yap State FSM: Fai – Fais, Uli – Ulithi, with additional abbreviations appearing as Pur, Uli, Wol, Far, Pol, Chk, and Pon. The section on Proto Oceanic and Proto (Nuclear) Micronesian linguistic and matrilineal heritage situates the discussion within archaeological perspectives on Nuclear Micronesian homelands and dispersals. It references a summary of Micronesian archaeology and an alternative view by Rainbird, based on the oldest dates deemed reliable for eastern Micronesia. The period of Chuukic language dispersal into the atolls is placed around AD 1000, with limited archaeological data available for Chuuk Lagoon for the centuries surrounding that era. A single radiocarbon date from the central Chuukic atolls for that timeframe is cited from Lamotrek at approximately 780 years ago. The author then turns to sources and methods for investigating the history of the 27 Chuukic clan names.
