Abstract: France continues to practice direct colonialism in Kanaky (New Caledonia), Tahiti Polynesia (French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna). The 'Compact' ties the former US Trust Territories of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Marshall Islands, and Palau to the United States. The Cook Islands and Niue are closely linked to New Zealand and Tokelau remains under New Zealand's control. Indonesia occupies West Papua. 2Middle-aged and old men (unimane in Kiribati) dominate decision-making in the patriarchal systems that characterise much of the region.
