Abstract: The article reports that on November 13, 1962, Guam was devastated by the most severe typhoon in its recorded history, leaving the island without power or water and causing an estimated 95% damage to residential and business areas. Nearly all stores were partially or totally destroyed, communications were largely cut except via nearby islands, and patients from Guam Memorial Hospital were moved to the Navy Hospital. Trust Territory facilities sustained heavy damage, including a blown-off roof at the old headquarters building and partial destruction of quonset houses.
Maritime losses included the Trust Territory dredge John S. Campbell and the M/V HOPE, with additional reported Navy losses and aircraft damage. The High Commissioner pledged all possible assistance, planned evacuations for affected families as transport allowed, and suspended travel to Guam from Saipan and other districts. Mr. Goding intended to visit Guam to confer with Acting Governor Manuel Guerrero and other officials, with further updates promised.
