Abstract: “Some Ponapean Proverbs” is a scholarly paper that explores a collection of proverbs from Ponape (now Pohnpei), an island in Micronesia. The proverbs were gathered by the authors Saul H. Riesenberg and J. L. Fischer during two separate periods: one in 1947 and the other in the early 1950s, under different projects and sponsorships.
The paper categorizes the collected proverbs according to their subject matter: the nature of men and women, love affairs and marriage, clan and family, speech and gossip, chiefs and commoners, difficult situations and fallibility, and miscellaneous topics. Each proverb is accompanied by commentary and, where applicable, legends associated with them .
The work emphasizes the cultural context and societal roles depicted in these proverbs. For instance, it explores themes such as the traditional expectations of men as warriors and stoic figures, the contrasting roles of men and women, and social dynamics within clans and between different social classes.
