Abstract: A letter from the Viceroy of New Spain to King Philip II, dated February 9, 1561, reports on preparations for an expedition to the Western Islands. It describes the construction and provisioning of two ships and a smaller vessel, with the fleet expected to be ready by the end of the year. The Viceroy requests two additional experienced pilots, noting that only three are currently available. Miguel López de Legazpi is appointed as general and leader of the expedition.
The letter characterizes Legazpi as a reputable gentleman from Quipuizcoa, considered suitable for the role because of his good standing and Christian character. The fleet will consist of approximately 250 to 300 people, including soldiers, sailors, and servants. The document also records that Legazpi and Fray Andrés de Urdaneta, chosen to direct and guide the expedition, are kinsmen and friends, a connection viewed as beneficial to the undertaking.
