Abstract: Narrative combining Francisco Gali’s 1584 voyage and Pedro de Unamuno’s 1587 expedition in search of islands rumored to contain gold and silver. Gali’s account describes navigation across the Pacific, contact with islands, and trade with Asian merchants. Unamuno’s voyage emphasizes difficult conditions, conflicts with islanders, and the failure to find the wealth expected. Together the reports illustrate Spain’s ambitions for Pacific exploration and the challenges of sustaining long-distance expeditions in dangerous and little-known waters.
