Abstract: This article examines the demographic and economic challenges facing atoll societies in the South Pacific, focusing on the relationships between population growth, migration, and development constraints. It analyzes how limited land resources, ecological fragility, and restricted economic opportunities contribute to increasing dependence on migration and remittances. The study highlights patterns of outmigration, particularly among younger and more skilled populations, and the resulting demographic imbalances and pressures on remaining communities. It also explores urbanization in atoll states and the concentration of population in central locations, creating new social and economic challenges. The article evaluates development strategies, including decentralization, employment redistribution, and agricultural adaptation, arguing that sustainable development requires balancing local self-reliance with external economic integration.
