Micronesia as Headline Fodder in the Us–china Contest

Bettis, Leland; Kuper, Kenneth Gofigan (2023). "Micronesia as Headline Fodder in the Us–china Contest". The Strategist. Canberra: Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

Abstract: Commentary critiquing how media narratives frame Micronesia primarily through the lens of U.S.-China strategic competition. The article argues that recent coverage of Compact of Free Association renewals and related agreements exaggerates their novelty while obscuring longstanding legal arrangements that already grant the United States defense authority in the region. It emphasizes that the real substance of negotiations concerns economic assistance rather than security transformation, and warns that framing Micronesia as a geopolitical battleground reduces island states to symbolic actors while overlooking development challenges and local priorities.
