Abstract: Historic Preservation Programs operating through Micronesia are strongly based on American concepts and practices and thus do not always satisfy Micronesian aspirations for preservation and on-going development of their cultures. Considerable, widespread dissatisfaction with current levels and practices of historic preservation is apparent right across Micronesia and is consistent regardless of ethnicity, culture, gender and age. Organisations and groups that currently have responsibilities for preserving elements of Micronesian culture (whether by tradition or appointment) are perceived to be failing those responsibilities.
