Abstract: KPress Vol. 08 Iss. 10: NEWS: Pohnpei—dignitaries and members of the public gathered on April 18, 2008 at Pohnpei International Airport for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the first phase of a major airport improvement project, during which recently donated FAA “Striker” airport fire trucks demonstrated their capabilities for attendees; the multi-phase project includes construction of a new generator building in the first phase, followed by runway and taxiway overlays, new shoulders, fillets, piles, and apron improvements in subsequent phases, and culminating in a new “Runway 9” turnaround and enhanced security features at the west end of the runway; reporting emphasizes that the upgrades are intended to strengthen airport safety, emergency response, and operational reliability; separate national coverage from Palikir reports that President Emanuel “Manny” Mori urged FSM citizens and residents to be mindful of rising global rice prices and to consume more locally produced foods, responding to international reports that rice prices had increased by as much as 50 percent over the previous year due to worldwide shortages linked to drought and other natural and economic disruptions in major producing countries.
