Abstract: A letter from Miguel López de Legazpi to the King of Spain, dated July 25, 1570, from Panay. It is part of a series of historical documents that have been digitized for noncommercial access by the Island Education Fund. In the letter, Legazpi discusses his reception of a letter from the King, the ongoing affairs in the archipelago, and the necessity of boats with oars for further exploration. He mentions the discovery of islands populated by Moros who possess artillery and conduct trade with the Chinese mainland and Japanese. Legazpi also notes the challenges encountered due to Portuguese interactions, the need for pacification and conversion of native populations, compliance with royal orders, and the presence of foreigners from various European countries in his ranks. He informs the King of the potential implications of territories being claimed by expeditions from Peru. Legazpi requests the return and favor of his son and grandson, who are handling affairs at the royal court, and sends the King two bronze cannons crafted by the Moros as a demonstration of their skills.
